Plastic Packaging for PVP-I

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I), also known as iodopovidone, is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. The Iodine is grabbed on the providone polymer and will be relesed slowly to kill microorganism. The antiseptic PVP-I concentration used on skin is 10%. The PVP-I is recently used on nasal spray and oral solution whose concentration is 0.45% (based on the Betadine products).

There are many commercial products of PVP-I which is packed by plastic containers. There chemical resistance of HDPE, PP and PET with PVP-I (10%) is good. Only one point necessary to be noted. The color of HDPE and PP will become a little yellow after long time containing PVP-I. The color of PET will not change. This is why the commercal products’ HDPE bottles are yellow or dark color normally.

Glass bottle has not such problem of color changing and here will not be discussed.
